Altar Box

2020

Medium: laser cut acrylic

The Secular Altar Box is a subproject of my MFA thesis exploring sacred space for a secular audience. The broader thesis considers how experiences of reflection, ritual, and awe can be accessible to everyone regardless of religion or belief. Designed as a small altar unattached to any specific tradition, the piece includes prompt cards that suggest different ways to engage with it while still encouraging open-ended personal interaction.

I developed the structure and geometric form of the altar, which was laser cut from iridescent acrylic to create a meditative, light-responsive object. The etched patterns draw from sacred geometry, an ancient visual language based on ratios and forms found in nature, while remaining abstract enough to avoid direct religious symbolism. When illuminated, the material casts vibrant projections onto surrounding surfaces, transforming the space into an immersive and contemplative environment.
