"The Natural Unnatural" is a series of digital illustrations created in this strange new era of a semi-virtual, isolated existence. At first, I drew my houseplants, imagining the relationships with each other and the little community I have fostered for them in my apartment. As my imagination grew more extensive, the more experimental I became with the depiction of my houseplants in my illustrations.

I carried on with this illustration style and included other characters, such as the friendly bugs that would occasionally pay a visit to my plant community. The more I blurred the line between reality and imagination through my digital drawings, the more I began implementing characters from the outside world (such as the Koi fish, bird, cricket, and tree).

My process began by roughly sketching out the scenes on paper and moving into Adobe Illustrator on the iPad. I worked with gradients, scale, and color to create a sense of blurred reality in the illustrations. For example, certain shadows and proportions would not be entirely accurate in the real world but would somehow feel right in the digital compositions.
